Too Good To Go highlights the persistence of waste

According to a Too Good To Go study, more than one in two people in France admit to having already thrown away food that was still edible

A new study presented by Too Good To Go, an exhibitor at NRF Retail’s Big Show Europe, shows that there is still a long way to go in the fight against waste. These three figures are particularly noteworthy :

  • 52 % of French people admit to having already thrown away food that was still edible.
  • Only 46 % of French people trust their senses before throwing away a product.
  • 27 % of young people aged 18 to 34 believe (wrongly) that food becomes unfit for consumption once the best-before date has passed.

These revealing figures highlight the need to better inform the French about adopting the right practices” concludes Too Good To Go. This observation is all the more justified, as 67 % of French people believe that the lack of information on expiration dates leads to premature food waste. “20 % of food waste in households stems from a misunderstanding of use-by dates” notes Too Good To Go, which estimates this waste due to ignorance at 30 euros per year.

In response to this observation, Too Good To Go has been implementing awareness-raising initiatives since 2020 with the deployment of its “Observez, sentez, goûtez” (“Look, smell, taste”) pictogram, already present on the packaging of more than 90 partner brands in France. This pictogram is now printed on 2 billion products each year.
